On 13th of November 2004 The UNESCO / Janusz Korczak Chair in Social Pedagogy was established at Maria Grzegorzewska University in Warsaw, Poland. The Chair preserves the educational heritage of two important figures Maria Grzegorzewska (1888-1967 advocate for human rights and social inclusion, the founder of the university in 1922), and Janusz Korczak (1878-1942 promotor of children’s rights, the Chair’s patron).

The Chair’s activities align with UNESCO’s humanities and social sciences priorities. The Chair is financially supported by the Maria Grzegorzewska University but enjoys academic freedom to create its own goals, aligned with the UNESCO Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030, especially SDG 4 aimed at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all, SDG 5 aimed at gender equality and SDG 10 for reducing inequalities. At the heart of the protection and promotion of quality education is the notion of Global Citizenship Education (GCE 4.7), and its three core elements, defined by UNESCO as a shared sense of humanity, respect for diversity, and solidarity.

The Chair carries out interdisciplinary research, didactics, and organizational activities defined by Sustainable Development Goals and the issues of social inclusion, social justice, and the strive for equality of opportunity. The research themes include: social inclusion, social justice, education, childhood studies, children's rights and human rights, gender equality, sustainable development, cultural diversity and the intercultural and interdisciplinary dimension of socio-pedagogical challenges. The activities cut across interdisciplinary boundaries of social sciences: pedagogy, sociology and psychology, conjoined by the interdisciplinary nature of socio-pedagogical framing.

The purpose of the Chair is to encourage a better understanding of the conditions and socio-pedagogical mechanisms of the child’s social development, participation and well-being. The Chair works towards improving the quality of child-oriented education, education for peace, justice and inclusion, drawing from Korczak's biographical and pedagogical contributions. The Chair works to develop international cooperation, aimed to reduce inequalities between North/South - East/West disparities. It aims to build bridges between countries of diverse wealth and cultural heritage and Central and Eastern Europe.

The Chair provides opportunities to develop training programs for educators, teachers and social science researchers in order to implement knowledge and creative approaches for work with children and their sociocultural environments. The Chair organizes international summer schools, seminars, and conferences yearly, it also produces book series and co-edits several open-access journals.
