Basically, the studies of sociology (MA) in the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences carried out within the frameworsks of two specialities:
Sociology of the Media
Sociology of Politics and Social Problems
The curriculum has been expanded to include a module dealing with the:
- sociology of politics;
- global social processes;
- social diversity;
- sociology of survey research;
- the ethics of social research;
- eveluation procedures.
SPECIALITY: Sociology of the Media
The program of this speciality comprises basic notions, phenomena, and processes from the field of sociology of the media.
Instruction involves:
- urban sociology;
- visual sociology;
- media research;
- art in contemporary world;
- the ethics in the media.
Possibilities of employment: media, non-governmental organizations.
SPECIALITY: Sociology of Politics and Social Problems
The program of this speciality involves instruction in the sociological interpretations of democracy and social inequalities, crisis and conflict, disability.
The subject Sociology of Politics and Social Problems involves the following thematic sequences of study:
- the state and civil societies;
- local communities;
- organizations and management;
- business, politics and ethics;
- research methods in political behaviour.
Possibilities of employmen: media, sector of social policy and social work, governmental and non-governmental organizations.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After graduating from a MA degree in Sociology, the student:
Knowledge
- has in-depth knowledge about the specifics and importance of sociology in the system of social sciences, its place and connections with related sciences and methodological specificity;
- is familiar with sociological terminology and related sciences at advanced level;
- has structured, in-depth knowledge covering theories and methodology in sociology and related sciences;
- has structured, in-depth knowledge leading to specialization in the field of sociology and related sciences;
- has detailed knowledge of contemporary achievements, research centers and schools in sociology and related sciences;
- knows and understands the advanced methods of analysis and interpretation of the various products of culture appropriate for the individual traditions, theories or schools of research in sociology and related sciences;
- knows and understands the basic concepts and principles related to the protection of industrial property and copyright law, and understands the need for management of intellectual property;
- has in-depth knowledge of the complex nature of language and its complexity and the historical volatility of its meaning;
- has extended knowledge of cultural institutions and is well-oriented in contemporary cultural life;
- has knowledge of different structures, organizations and social institutions, and in-depth knowledge in relation to the structures, social institutions and organizations in the field of sociology of culture/ sociology of communication;
- has in-depth knowledge about the relationship between the structures, institutions and social organizations in relation to the structures, organizations and cultural institutions;
- has in-depth knowledge in the domain of social bonds;
- has knowledge of man as a creator of culture, especially in relation to the social areas of human activity;
- has knowledge of methods, tools and techniques of data collection, allowing to describe the structure, organizations and social institutions;
- has in-depth knowledge of the norms and rules (social, legal, organizational and moral) organizing structures and social institutions; is familiar with regularities that govern them and their sources, nature, change, and methods of operation;
- has in-depth knowledge of the changes of structures and social institutions and their components, of the reasons, the course, the scale and consequences of these changes;
- has in-depth knowledge of the changing ideas, concepts and notions about the structures and social institutions and modes of social relations and their historical evolution;
- is familiar with the general principles of creating and developing the forms of individual activity and entrepreneurship, by using knowledge of the social sciences domain;
Skills
- is able to notice, observe and interpret social phenomena, deepened and enriched by explaining the relationship between social phenomena;
- is able to use theoretical knowledge to describe and analyse the social processes and formulate his/ her own opinions;
- is able to predict and model complex processes and social phenomena (as well as cultural, political, legal, economic) using advanced sociological methods and tools;
- respects the rules and standards of professional ethics as well as legal, professional and moral rules in order to solve a specific task;
- is able to analyze the causes and course of the processes and of social phenomena (as well as cultural, political, legal and economic ), formulate their own opinions on the subject and put forward research hypothesis and verify them;
- has the ability to use the acquired knowledge in different ranges and forms, and to make a critical analysis of the effectiveness and suitability of applied knowledge;
- is able to independently propose solutions to a specific problem;
- has the ability to understand and analyze social phenomena, enhanced by the ability to assess cultural phenomena using research methods;
- has the ability to prepare written works in Polish on issues of social sciences, using standards adopted in sociology;
- has the ability to prepare speeches in Polish, on issues of social sciences, using standards adopted in sociology;
- has foreign language skills in the field of sociology, in accordance with the requirements for level B2 + set out by European Framework of Reference for Languages;
- is able to search, analyze, evaluate, select and use information using a variety of sources and formulate critical judgments based on the given material;
- knows how to acquire knowledge independently, develop research skills and take autonomous action to develop and manage his/ her own career;
- is able to carry out a critical analysis and interpretation of the various texts and cultural products in the field of sociology, taking into account new developments in sociology in order to determine their meaning, social impact, place in the historical and cultural processes;
- has the ability to argument substantively, using his/ her own ideas and other authors, to formulate conclusions and create synthetic summaries;
- is able to communicate using a variety of communication techniques with specialists in sociology and related sciences, as well as to popularize knowledge of sociology and products of culture and its institutions;
Social competence
- understands the need for lifelong learning; can inspire and organize the learning process;
- is able to interact and work in a group, taking up different roles;
- can properly determine the rules for the implementation of a specific task set out by him/ herself or by others;
- correctly identifies and resolves dilemmas related with the pursuit of a sociologist;
- knows how to cooperate in the preparation of social projects and can envisage multi- effects of his/ her actions;
- can independently and critically complement his/ her knowledge and skills of social sciences;
- is able to think and act in a creative and enterprising way;
- understands the need for active participation in activities aimed at preserving the cultural heritage of the region, country, Europe;
- understands the need for systematic participation in cultural life, is interested in current events, cultural, innovative forms of artistic expression and new trends in arts.
