Basically, the studies of sociology (BA) in the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences carried out within the frameworsks of two specialities:

Sociology of Communication and Social Processes

Sociology of Culture

The curriculum has been expanded to include a module dealing with the sociology of social dynamics:

• sociology of social transformation;
• conflict, deviation and social control;
• sociology of time;
• poverty;
• social communication;
• religion;
• gender.

SPECIALITY: Sociology of Communication and Social Processes

The program of this speciality comprises basic notions, phenomena, and processes from the field of sociology of communication, european integration, social exclusion.
Instruction involves:

- sociology of education;

- sociology of conficts and negotiations;

- labour market problems;

- social networks;

- social aspects of migration.

The licentiates will be able to seek employment in: media, sector of social policy and social work, non-governmental organizations.

SPECIALITY: Sociology of Culture

Culture constitutes one of the basic categories of the sociological interpretation of social reality. The program of this speciality involves instruction in the sociological interpretations of religion and nation, ethics and tradition, subcultures, gender, media (both traditional and modern).
The subject Sociology of Culture (both lectures and classes) involves the following thematic sequences of study:

- culture and society: relations, points of convergence, and mutual influences;

- culture and personality: processes of acquiring culture, socialization, internalization;

- national culture and the culture of minority groups;

- mass culture and popular culture;

- culture of the consumer society;

- culture of the poor, culture of the excluded and marginalized;

- time and space in culture;

- sociology of art;

- methods for researching cultural phenomena.

The licentiates will be able to work in media, governmental and non-governmental organizations.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After graduating from a BA degree in Sociology the student:

Knowledge

• can demonstrate basic knowledge about the place and significance of sociology in the social sciences system, its connection to related studies as well as its specificity in terms of subject and methods used;

• is familiar with the basic sociological terms and related sciences;

• has general well-ordered knowledge (regarding terminology, ideas, methodology), both in sociology and related sciences

• has detailed well-ordered knowledge,  in such areas of sociology as: sociology of culture, sociology of communication, cultural anthropology, philosophy, ethics, social psychology.

• has a basic knowledge of the main directions of development and the most important new developments in sociology and related sciences;

• knows and understands the basic methods of analysis and ways of interpretation of the various cultural products, which are appropriate for given traditions, theories or schools of research within sociology and related sciences;

• knows and understands the basic concepts and principles of the protection of industrial property and copyright law;

• is aware of the complex nature of language and the historical volatility of the meanings it conveys;

• has a basic knowledge of cultural institutions and is well-oriented in contemporary cultural life;

• has knowledge of different structures, institutions and social organizations (cultural, political, legal, economic and medical) and their components in the regional or local scale;

• has knowledge about the relationship between the structures, institutions and social organizations at the national, international and intercultural level;

• has knowledge about the types of social relationships (family ties, social, cultural, professional, organizational, territorial, economic, political, legal) and knows regularities that govern them;

• has a basic knowledge of man, human relationships and social bonds;

• is familiar with methods and tools, including data collection techniques, appropriate for sociology, allowing to conduct empirical research;

• has knowledge of the norms and rules (social, legal, organizational and moral) influencing structures and social institutions; he/she knows the regularity that govern them and their sources, nature, change, and methods of operation;

• has knowledge of the changes in the structures and social institutions and their components, of the causes, course, scale and consequences of these changes;

• has knowledge of the changing ideas, concepts and notions about the structures and social institutions and the types of social relations and their historical evolution;

• is familiar with the general principles and development of individual entrepreneurial activity with the use of knowledge in the social sciences;

Skills

• is able to correctly interpret social phenomena (as well as cultural, political, legal, economic, and health) in sociology;

• is able to use the basic theoretical knowledge and obtain data to analyse specific processes and social phenomena (as well as cultural, political, legal, economic) in sociology;

• is able to predict the processes and social phenomena  (as well as cultural, political, legal, economic), using standard methods and tools used in sociology;

• respects the rules of sociology professional ethics and standards, and legal, professional and moral rules in order to solve a specific task ;

• is able to analyse the causes and course of the processes and social phenomena (as well as  cultural, political , legal and economic) in sociology;

• uses his/ her knowledge to resolve dilemmas arising in the work;

• analyses proposed solutions to social problems and participates in making decisions in this regard;

• has the ability to understand and analyse social phenomena;

• has the ability to prepare essays in Polish language, which meet the standards adopted in the sociology, on specific issues in the social sciences using a variety of sources;

• has the ability to prepare speeches in Polish, which meet the standards adopted in sociology, on issues in the social sciences using a variety of sources;

• has foreign language skills in the field of sociology, in accordance with the requirements for level B2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages ​;

• is able to search, analyse, evaluate, select and use information using a variety of sources and techniques;

• knows how to acquire knowledge independently and develop research skills with the guidance of a tutor;

• distinguishes between various types of texts and cultural products in the field of sociology, and conducts their critical analysis and interpretation using conventional methods, in order to determine their meaning, social impact, place in the historical and cultural processes;

• has the ability to argue the merits and draw conclusions;

• is able to communicate using a variety of communication techniques in Polish.

Social competence

• understands the need for lifelong learning;

• is able to interact and work in a group, taking up different roles;

• can properly definite the rules for the implementation of specified tasks set by him/ herself or others;

• correctly identifies and resolves dilemmas associated with the pursuit of a sociologist;

• can cooperate in the preparation of social projects (as well as political, economic, civil, cultural), taking into account their legal, economic and political aspects;

• can complement and improve the acquired knowledge and skills;

• is able to think and act in a creative and enterprising way;

• is aware of the responsibility for the preservation of cultural heritage of the region, country, Europe;

• participates in cultural life, using different media and different forms of cultural life.
