"When your colleague comments “Fantastic weather” on a cold, rainy and windy day, you can instantly recognize their use of verbal irony, which is sometimes called sarcasm. Speakers can use verbal irony to convey a critical attitude, and to bring humour to the conversation. But how are we able to immediately recognize when a speaker’s verbal message is very different from their intended meaning? And when can children understand that verbal irony can be used to both criticize and to convey humour? In my presentation, I’ll describe my research program aimed at answering how verbal irony comprehension develops. I will also discuss how child listeners can use cues to verbal irony, such as the speaker’s personality traits, the speaker’s intonation, the speaker’s knowledge, and the parties present when ironic criticisms are made. Lastly, I’ll describe my recent research aimed at exploring how culture and languages spoken at home can influence adults’ appreciation of verbal irony."
